Comedy fans have credited Jim Carrey with exposing one of the ‘darkest secrets’ of the entertainment industry in front of millions of people.
Carrey has taken on some truly iconic roles over the years, from Lloyd in Dumb and Dumber to Joel in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but would you ever have associated him with the role of a whistleblower?
It might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the comedian, but that’s exactly what he was praised for after he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live a few years ago.
Carrey appeared on the show to promote the 2014 movie Dumb and Dumber To, but as he walked out in front of the crowd he repeatedly made a gesture which Kimmel later likened to a ‘gang sign’.
When asked why Carrey was creating a triangle around his mouth and sticking out his tongue, the comedian scoffed at the idea that Kimmel didn’t know what he was doing.
“Like you don’t know what it is,” he said. “You don’t know, Jimmy Fallon doesn’t know, David Letterman doesn’t know – all the comics in showbusiness don’t know what this is.
“Come on, Jimmy, seriously, the time is up.”
Carrey went on to say he was ‘sick and tired’ of the ‘secrets and the lies’, and declared that the sign was the ‘secret symbol of the illuminati‘.
“It is the all-mocking tongue,” he explained. “I want everybody to be in on the joke.”
Carrey claimed that ‘for years now’ people on television have been ‘hired by the government’ as a distraction from ‘what’s really going on’ and to keep us ‘happy and docile’.
“They get out of there in the woods in a circle, naked, and decide these things,” he claimed.
Furthering the joke, Carrey then went on to say his phone was buzzing and pulled it out, only to apparently get hypnotized by whoever was on the other end.
“I think what I was really trying to say is that people will really enjoy Dumb and Dumber this weekend,” he said.
After Carrey shared his ‘secrets’, viewers praised the comedian for the segment as one person wrote: “He showed the darkest secrets!”
Another added: “He exposed them all. Love Jim Carrey.”
The clip has racked up more than nine million views on YouTube, and a further 19 million after it was shared on X today (7 March).
But it seems that despite Carrey exposing them all, we’re still fans of watching the talk shows that leave us so ‘happy and docile’.
