By morning, it was everywhere.
Local news. Charlotte Observer. TV. Social media.
Prominent teacher arrested for kidnapping and abuse of minors. Suspect is son of St. Mary’s Medical Center director.
The Bennett name was in every headline. In every coffee shop. In every whispered conversation in every hallway of my hospital.
At 9:15, my phone rang.
Dad.
I took a deep breath and answered.
“David. Come to the house. Now.”
His voice was ice. Not the voice of a man whose son had just been arrested for unspeakable things. The voice of a man whose empire was on fire.
I took Sophie next door to Mrs. Patterson.
“Daddy’s going to see Grandpa and Grandma for a little bit. Be good, okay?”
She hugged me around the waist. “Come back soon.”
I drove to Maplewood Heights. Past the grand old houses and the perfect lawns. Every turn on that road was a memory. Birthday parties. Christmas mornings. Graduations.
None of it looked the same anymore.
My father was standing in the middle of the living room in a gray suit. He had a newspaper rolled up in his fist. His face was purple.
My mother sat on the leather sofa with her back perfectly straight and her hands folded in her lap. She was wearing pearls. Her eyes were like glass.
“Sit down,” my father said.
I sat.
He didn’t wait.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done? You brought the police into your brother’s home. You’ve destroyed this family’s name. This could have been handled. Quietly. Internally. We had lawyers. We had arrangements. And now? The press is crucifying us. The board has called four times this morning. Patients are cancelling surgeries. What in God’s name were you thinking?”
He slammed the newspaper down on the coffee table.
I looked at him for a long time.
“There were two little girls in his basement, Dad.”
He didn’t even blink.
“That’s for the lawyers to sort out.”
“They were tied up. They hadn’t eaten in two days.”
“David—”
“And he had Sophie’s name in a notebook.”
For one second, my father’s face moved.
Then it went still again.
