My Ex-Wife Told Me to Get Our 9-Year-Old Daughter Away From My Brother Hours Later, I Found Sophie’s Name Hidden in His Files

The next six months were the hardest of my life.

Matthew was held without bail. The trial date was set for spring.

The press never stopped. Every week there was a new headline. Colleagues at the hospital stopped talking when I walked into a room. I heard someone whisper in the cafeteria. That’s the brother.

I cut my surgical schedule in half. I stopped taking night calls. I picked Sophie up from school every single day.

We went to the park. We drew pictures together at the kitchen table. I read to her every night. All the pages. Every single one.

She started laughing again. Little by little.

Laura came every weekend. Then some weeknights too. We started cooking dinner together. Watching movies with Sophie between us on the couch.

Sophie asked about Matthew a few times.

“Where did Uncle Matthew go?”

“He had to go away for a long time, sweetheart.”

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she said, very quietly, “Good.”

I didn’t push her. But I found her a therapist. A gentle woman who specialized in children. Sophie went every week.

The trial was held in the Mecklenburg County Courthouse in downtown Charlotte. An old granite building with columns out front and reporters crowding the steps.

I sat in the back row. Laura sat beside me and held my hand.

When they brought Matthew in, I didn’t recognize him at first.

He’d lost thirty pounds. His face was gray. His eyes were sunken. He sat at the defense table with his head down and his hands shaking.

My brother. The one I used to carry home on my back when he skinned his knee.

My parents sat in the front row behind him. My father didn’t look back once. My mother sat with a handkerchief crushed in her hand.

The prosecutor read the charges. Kidnapping. Unlawful imprisonment. Sexual abuse of minors. Possession of illegal images. Stalking.

The courtroom went dead silent.
