My Ex-Wife Told Me to Get Our 9-Year-Old Daughter Away From My Brother Hours Later, I Found Sophie’s Name Hidden in His Files

A week after the verdict, a letter came in the mail.

White envelope. My father’s handwriting, shaky.

From this day forward, you are no longer a member of this family.

That was all.

A week after that, a cardboard box arrived. My mother had packed up everything of mine that was still in their house. Childhood photos. My medical school diploma. My first stethoscope. A toy fire truck I’d given Matthew when he was five.

No note.

I sat on the floor of my apartment and went through it piece by piece.

I’d lost my parents. My brother. My name, in a way. My reputation at the hospital.

But I’d kept something more important.

I could look my daughter in the eye.

Charlotte felt like a glass cage after that. Every street reminded me of something. So I made a decision.

I resigned from St. Mary’s. The department head was stunned.

“David, you’re one of the best surgeons we have.”

“I know,” I said. “But I need to be a better father more than I need to be a better surgeon.”

I moved Sophie to Brevard, a small mountain town in the Blue Ridge, a few hours west of Charlotte. Cool air. Quiet streets. Waterfalls in the woods. There was a children’s therapy center there that Sophie’s counselor had recommended.

We rented a small house on the edge of town with a backyard that looked out at the hills.

“Why are we moving, Dad?” Sophie asked. “Isn’t Charlotte home?”

I sat down on the floor of her new bedroom and pulled her into my lap.

“Home is wherever we’re together, sweetheart. And there are good people here who are going to help you feel safe again.”

She thought about it.

“Will Mom come?”

“Every weekend. She promised.”
