My Ex-Wife Told Me to Get Our 9-Year-Old Daughter Away From My Brother Hours Later, I Found Sophie’s Name Hidden in His Files

I need to tell you who we are, because it matters for what came after.

The Bennetts are a medical family in Charlotte, North Carolina. My grandfather was a surgeon. My father, Richard Bennett, has run St. Mary’s Medical Center for twenty-two years. His name is on a wing of the hospital. His photo hangs in the lobby. When he walks into a room, people stand up.

My mother, Margaret, runs the St. John’s Foundation, a charity that raises money for poor children in the county. She has been photographed handing out oversized checks more times than I can count.

I followed my father into medicine because that was what Bennett sons did. I was good at it. I’m still good at it.

Matthew didn’t follow. He was three years younger than me, the baby of the family, and he wanted to teach literature. My parents could have been angry. Instead they called him artistic. They called him sensitive. They bought him a little house on the edge of town and told everyone at the country club that their youngest had a calling.

Growing up, I protected him. He was the small, gentle one. When kids at school picked on him, I was the one who stepped in. When he cried, I was the one who sat with him. He was my little brother. That’s what you do.

Now he was thirty-five. Messy brown hair. Easy smile. The fun uncle. The one who brought Sophie presents and told her stories about dragons.

I had no idea what Laura was talking about.

But I knew Laura.

We met in college. We married young. We had Sophie. And then our careers ate our marriage alive. Me in the operating room. Her chasing cases for the Charlotte Police Department’s special investigations unit. We didn’t stop loving each other. We just stopped being able to be in the same room without one of us being exhausted.

We divorced three years ago. Quietly. For Sophie’s sake. I got custody because Laura’s job had her on call at all hours.

In all those years, through all our fights, Laura had never once used the voice she’d just used on the phone.

It wasn’t anger.

It was fear.
