We moved in the second week of May.
The lilacs by the front porch were in full bloom. Purple and heavy. The whole yard smelled like June’s kitchen used to smell every spring.
Cody got his old Sunday nap room.
Hailey took the room at the top of the stairs. The one with the window that looks out over the red barn.
She taped her savings chart to the inside of her closet door.
The red marker colored all the way to the top.
That first Sunday, I had a roast in the oven. The table was set for five.
At a quarter past twelve, there was a knock on the back door.
I knew who it was.
Nobody else in the whole world would have come to that door.
Walt was standing on the back porch in his good gray church coat. He had his seed cap in his hand.
He’d walked through that back door without knocking for fifty years.
And now he stood on the mat. And waited to be asked in.
I opened the screen door and held it.
“Walt,” I said. “This door has never needed a knock.”
He stood there one second longer.
Then he wiped his boots on the mat. Twice.
And he came in.
When Walt cleared out the house four years before, he’d packed up the whole kitchen into boxes for the church rummage sale.
I’d gone through one of those boxes before it left. And I’d kept one thing out of it.
It had sat at the very back of my kitchen cupboard in town ever since. Behind the good gravy boat. Waiting.
I poured the coffee.
And I set his old brown stoneware cup, with the chip on the handle, down on the oilcloth in front of his place at the table.
He looked at it for a long time.
Then he picked it up.
He turned it around once on the oilcloth.
And he drank.
