He set the stone back down carefully. Then he motioned for me to follow him.
Toward the storage room.
Mom was awake inside.
She was sitting on the edge of a narrow cot, wearing the gray cardigan I’d bought her last Christmas. A battery-powered lamp sat on a plastic crate between two cots.
When she saw me, she covered her mouth with both hands.
“Gabriel.”
That’s how I knew how frightened she’d been.
Nobody but my mother calls me Gabriel anymore.
I crossed that little room in two steps and hugged her.
For a few seconds, she held onto me like I was seventeen years old again, leaving Carmona for college.
Then she pulled back.
“You weren’t supposed to come.”
“You told me not to.”
“I know.”
“That practically guaranteed I would.”
She gave me a weak smile.
Dad shut the door behind us.
I looked around the room. And I noticed the things I’d missed at first.
Mom’s sewing basket. Dad’s reading glasses on a shelf. Two framed photographs. Their medicine bottles lined up neatly. A little electric kettle.
They hadn’t been sleeping out here for one night. Or two.
They’d made a whole life fit inside a room that used to hold rakes and paint cans.
I kept my voice very calm.
“How long?”
Mom looked at Dad.
“Almost four months,” Dad said.
I had to turn away for a moment.
Four months.
Every Sunday on the phone. Tomatoes and puppies and the leaky faucet.
And not one word about sleeping behind the laundry shed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Mom twisted her wedding ring around her finger.
“Because we thought we could fix it.”
“Fix what, Mom?”
Dad sat down on the other cot. He set the rusty key on his knee.
“It started last year,” he said.
