The ride to Mercy Hospital felt endless.
Tommy drifted in and out. Every few minutes he’d open his eyes to make sure I was still there.
I kept my hand where he could see it.
“Grandpa?”
“I’m here.”
“Am I in trouble?”
“No.”
“But I called you.”
“That was the right thing to do.”
“Dad says calling people about family problems is betrayal.”
My chest got tight.
“No, buddy. It isn’t.”
He blinked slowly.
“Then why does he say it?”
I didn’t have an answer that wouldn’t put an adult-sized truth on a twelve-year-old.
So I said, “Because grown-ups can be wrong.”
That was enough. For then.
At the hospital they ran tests. Blood work. Vitals. Neurological checks.
The ER doctor was careful. She didn’t tell me Tommy had been poisoned. She didn’t jump to conclusions. She said his symptoms were consistent with significant sedation, and they needed to find out exactly what he’d taken and how much.
That kind of precision mattered.
Especially because twenty minutes later, Robert and Jennifer walked into the emergency department.
With an attorney.
An attorney. On Christmas Eve. Before there were even any lab results.
That told me plenty.
Officer Reyes had followed us to the hospital. She met them in the hallway.
Robert tried to walk into Tommy’s room.
Tommy saw him through the doorway. And he immediately turned his face into my shirt.
The nurse saw it.
So did Officer Reyes.
“He’s upset because my father scared him,” Robert said.
Tommy whispered into my shirt, “No.”
The nurse walked over and closed the door.
That was the first time in my life I ever felt relief hearing a door close between me and my son.
