My Parents Drained My $48,000 Trust for My Sister’s Wedding Then My Fiancé Took the Microphone at Her Gala

My mother called me the next morning.

Her voice was sweet. Too sweet.

“Isela, honey. Your father was upset last night. He didn’t mean the way it sounded. Let’s put this behind us.”

“How?”

“We’ve had our attorney draw up a little document. Just a family agreement. Saying you understand the funds were used for family purposes, and you release us from any misunderstanding. You could sign it at the gala on Saturday. In front of everyone. Wouldn’t that be lovely? A real gesture of family unity.”

A liability waiver.

They wanted me to sign away my right to sue them. On a stage. In front of two hundred people. With a smile.

I thought about what Beckett told me the night before, in the truck on the way home.

Let them commit everything publicly.

“Okay, Mom,” I said. “I’ll sign it at the gala.”

She actually exhaled with relief.

“Oh, sweetheart. Thank you. I knew you’d come around.”

I hung up.

Diane advised me not to go to the gala.

“You have enough on paper,” she said. “You don’t need to be in the room.”

She was right, legally.

But I’d spent three weeks watching my family assume I was somebody who could be managed. Outmaneuvered. Smiled at until I signed.

And some part of me needed them to understand that the paper I’d agreed to sign wasn’t the paper they thought it was.

And I wanted to see Beckett in a room where my father had spent eighteen months calling him a bricklayer.

On Thursday afternoon, Beckett texted me one line.

It’s done.

He didn’t explain. And I didn’t ask.
