Four months after that morning at O’Hare, Brittany’s attorney negotiated a plea deal.
She pleaded guilty to possession of stolen controlled substances. Filing a false report to law enforcement. And attempted obstruction of justice for trying to frame me.
The prosecutor wanted jail time. Brittany’s lawyer fought for probation.
The judge split the difference. A suspended sentence of eighteen months in county jail. Three years of supervised probation. If she violated any condition, she’d serve the full eighteen months.
And restitution. Full restitution of my legal fees.
She lost her job at the pharmaceutical company the week the charges were filed. A pharmaceutical sales rep with a conviction for possession of stolen opioids doesn’t keep her job.
Ethan filed for divorce in November.
I never once asked the prosecutor for anything. Never asked for a harsher sentence. Never made a phone call to an old colleague. I wanted it to go through the system on the evidence alone. The same way I always insisted my own cases did.
The evidence was enough.
With the restitution money, I paid Robert Hanley’s bills. Then I sat down with him and rewrote my entire estate plan from scratch.
The lake house is in a trust now. With an independent professional trustee. A bank in Milwaukee. If I’m ever truly incapacitated, it takes two independent doctors, neither one chosen by family, to say so.
Ethan is still the beneficiary. He’ll inherit the house someday.
But nobody will ever be able to take it from me while I’m still sitting on that porch.
Six months after that terrible morning, in March, I finally boarded my postponed flight to Denver.
I went through TSA at O’Hare like everybody else. I took off my shoes. I put my carry-on on the conveyor belt.
The TSA officer glanced at my boarding pass. Then she glanced at me.
“Have a good flight, ma’am.”
“Thank you,” I said. “I think I will.”
