My Daughter-in-Law Planted a Black Pouch in My Suitcase and Planned to Call Airport Security She Forgot I Was a Retired Fraud Investigator

The lead investigator was a detective from the Chicago Police Department’s Airport Law Enforcement unit. Detective Raymond Cho. Late forties. Calm. Careful.

He sat down across from me with a notepad.

I walked him through everything. The video. The phone call I’d overheard. The original camera file, still in the cloud with its timestamps intact. The bag I never touched.

He listened without interrupting. When I finished, he set down his pen.

“Mrs. Wilson,” he said. “I understand you used to work for the Inspector General.”

“Twenty-eight years.”

“Elder financial abuse?”

“Among other things.”

He nodded slowly.

“Then let me ask you a question you’ll recognize. Has anybody recently tried to get legal authority over your finances?”

I almost smiled.

“Yes, Detective. Two weeks ago. A durable power of attorney. With an incapacity clause that takes effect on the say-so of any licensed physician.”

His eyebrows went up.

“Did you sign it?”

“No.”

“Do you have a copy?”

“I have every page,” I said. “Photographed on my phone. And my attorney has reviewed it. He advised me not to sign.”

Detective Cho sat back in his chair.

“Mrs. Wilson,” he said. “I’ve been doing this a long time. A suspected planting of drugs on an elderly woman, two weeks after she refuses to sign over her finances? That’s not a coincidence.”

“No,” I said. “It’s a pattern.”

“We’ll still have to prove intent,” he said. “That’s the hard part.”

“I know,” I said. “That was always the hard part.”
