She answered on the first ring.
“Claire?”
“Hi, Mom.”
There was a long silence on the line.
“I’m so sorry I missed your surgery,” I said. “I knew the date. March fourteenth. I thought about you every single hour that day.”
My mother started crying.
“I knew you did, honey,” she said. “I don’t know how. But I knew.”
We talked until two in the morning.
I couldn’t tell her where I’d been. But I could tell her other things.
That I’d been safe, mostly. That I’d been lonely, always. That I’d kept a photograph of the whole family, the one from Grandpa’s seventy-fifth birthday, in a place I won’t name, and looked at it every night.
That I was home now. For good.
A week later, my father called.
We met for coffee at a diner in Alexandria. The one he used to take me to on Saturday mornings when I was a little girl.
He didn’t ask me what I’d been doing.
He’d talked to some of Grandpa’s old friends. Men who didn’t know specifics either, but knew enough to tell him what a four-star general’s salute at a funeral actually means.
He just sat across the booth from me and stirred his coffee for a long time.
“I was wrong about you,” he finally said. “For five years. And probably before that too.”
“You didn’t have the information, Dad.”
“I had you,” he said. “Your whole life. I should’ve known you better than that.”
He reached across the table and put his big hand over mine.
“My father knew,” he said quietly. “And I didn’t. That’s going to sit with me for a while.”
“He didn’t know either, Dad. Not really. He just trusted me.”
My father looked at me for a long moment.
“Then I’ll start there,” he said.
