My Husband Filed for Divorce After We Won $2.4 Million. Then the Lottery Office Called Me About the Ticket

“Mrs. Dunn,” Linda said carefully, “can you tell me what’s written on the back of that ticket?”

I set my glass of iced tea down on the porch rail.

The tomatoes were doing well that summer. A bumblebee was working the yellow blossoms right by my knee.

And through the phone, I could hear my husband. Loud. And getting louder.

“That’s my wife’s handwriting! She’s a vindictive woman! I bought this ticket! I’m the one who bought it!”

“Linda,” I said. “I’d be glad to tell you. But first, would you read it to me? Tell me how it reads to you.”

There was a rustle of paper. She cleared her throat.

“It says, ‘This ticket belongs to Patricia Ann Dunn, who paid for it with her own money, on her own Friday, and who will not be sharing it with anyone who laughed.'”

She paused.

“It’s signed Patty Dunn. With last Friday’s date.”

“There’s a line under it, I think,” I said. “Smaller.”

Another rustle.

“‘If found by Gary, put it back.'”

On the other end of the line, somebody made a sound.

And it wasn’t Linda.

My name is Patricia Dunn. I’m fifty-eight years old. I’ve kept the books for the Ottawa County Farmers Co-op in Miami, Oklahoma, for twenty-six years.

And I’ve been married to Gary Dunn since I was twenty-four and he was twenty-six. A tall, easy-laughing lineman for the electric company with a beautiful singing voice and a way of making any room feel like it belonged to him.

I’m going to tell you about the nineteen years.

Because they matter a whole lot more than the two point four million.
