After My Husband Died, My Father Dragged Me Out of My Own House While I Was Eight Months Pregnant, Then One Call Exposed What He Was Trying to Take

At 4:17 that afternoon, Samantha came back into my room carrying a small tablet.

“There’s something else,” she said. She looked uncomfortable. “Lucas left a video message. His instructions were that I show it to you if anyone ever tried to interfere with your inheritance.”

I reached for the tablet with shaking hands.

The screen went dark. Then Lucas appeared.

He was sitting at the desk in our home office, wearing his favorite navy blue sweater. The one with the little hole in the left elbow I kept threatening to throw away.

Seeing him almost broke me in half.

“Hey, sweetheart,” he said.

His voice filled the whole room. I pressed my hand over my mouth.

“If you’re watching this, something’s happened that I really hoped we could avoid.”

He looked so tired. There were dark circles under his eyes I’d never noticed.

“I found evidence that Charles has been moving money out of the business. A lot of it. When I confronted him about it, he told me I was making a terrible mistake.”

Lucas rubbed his forehead with one hand.

“I don’t know how far he’ll go to protect himself. But I know how he treats you when he thinks nobody’s watching.”

Tears ran down my face.

“I should have told you sooner,” he said. “I thought I could fix it quietly. Without making you choose between your husband and your father.”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“But Victoria, listen to me. You never have to choose between protecting yourself and keeping somebody else happy. Never.”

I started sobbing.

Then Lucas said something I’ll never forget as long as I live.

“There’s one more thing. If anything happens to me, don’t assume the accident was my fault.”

The video ended.

I couldn’t breathe. I just stared at that black screen.

Samantha reached over and took my hand. “Victoria?”

“His accident,” I whispered. “The state police said he lost control on the Thruway.”

“Yes.”

“He was driving to Rochester that morning.”

“Yes.”

“To meet an auditor?”

Samantha slowly nodded. “He’d set up a meeting about the missing money.”

My heart started pounding so hard I could see it on the monitor.

“Did my father know about that meeting?”

Samantha’s silence was all the answer I needed.

I gripped the bedsheet in both fists.

“Was Lucas murdered?”

“We don’t know that,” Samantha said carefully. “And I don’t want you jumping to conclusions without evidence.”

But she took that video very seriously. She’d already sent the financial records to the Onondaga County District Attorney’s office. She told me the accident on the Thruway could be looked at again.

I turned my head and looked out the window. Rain was streaking down the glass.

Three weeks earlier, I’d buried the man I loved most in the world.

Now I was starting to wonder whether some of the people who stood at his graveside had known more about his death than they ever said.
