She picked up the page with both hands, like it was hot, and read it slowly, her lips moving. When she got to the end, she read it again.
Then she lowered it.
“Natalie, I don’t know how to do this.”
“I know.”
“I don’t have a plan.” Her voice cracked. “I’ve only ever had you.”
I put my hands over my face.
I’d been ready for everything else: fury, begging, a flood of lies. I wasn’t ready for that, the plain, bare truth said out loud by a woman in a lavender dress in a lawyer’s conference room.
I’ve only ever had you.
I sat with my palms pressed against my eyes. A chair creaked, and a pen rolled across the table.
Then a hand closed over mine. It was small and warm, with a plump knuckle and a familiar ring.
My mother had come around the table. She was kneeling on the carpet beside my chair in her good silk dress, her face wet and her hair coming loose from its pins.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m so sorry, baby. I was scared. I thought if I let you go, you’d leave me.”
“I know, Mom.”
“And you’d have been right to.”
I put my arms around her. She folded against me, a small, shaking weight with her forehead on my shoulder, smelling of Chanel and hairspray and tears. I held her in that gray conference room in Marietta, and I felt twenty-two years go out of me like air from a tire.
Across the table, Kyle put his face in his hands.
Before we left, both of them signed a short written acknowledgment that Helen drafted on the spot. It said the $94,000 was mine and that they had no claim to any of it. Denise notarized their signatures. My mother read every line before she signed. I watched her do it.
Then I signed the instruction letter authorizing Alston & Greer to return my funds from escrow. Alston walked us to the elevator himself.
“Ms. Mercer,” he said quietly, while my mother and Kyle waited by the doors. “In twenty-six years of closings, I’ve seen a lot of people sign things they didn’t read. I’ve seen very few of them stop in time.”
“I almost didn’t.”
“Almost is the whole difference,” he said.
