Eleanor gathered the pages into neat stacks.
“With your permission, Mara, Mr. Bell and I will forward all of this to the investigator Judge Porter appointed, and to the state attorney general’s office, which oversees charitable organizations. Misusing a veterans’ charity’s money isn’t a family matter. It belongs to the people the money was meant for.”
“Will Ruth and Frank be arrested?”
“Not today,” Thomas Bell said. “An investigation isn’t a verdict. But they may face very serious consequences.”
Andrew let out a breath that sounded almost like relief, and then caught himself.
“So may I,” he said.
Then he did something I didn’t expect. He turned to Bell and asked whether the investigators would need a full account of what he knew and when he knew it. And whether he should hire his own attorney. A different one. Not Calder.
Over the next two weeks, we met with the investigators separately.
I gave them the trust records, the bank statements, Victor’s estate file, the foundation ledgers, and every document connected to the proposed divorce agreement.
Andrew gave them the transfer agreements, Ruth’s emails to him, and the messages from Martin’s office telling him to sign papers he hadn’t read. He gave them dates. The days Ruth called him into her office. The days Frank asked him to approve “temporary adjustments.” The nights he’d come home late, said nothing, and eaten the dinner I’d kept warm as if silence could make the day disappear.
The investigators treated him the way his own lawyer had warned they would. As a participant who had finally decided to become a witness.
One afternoon, after another long interview, Andrew found me on the courthouse steps. Autumn had come early. The wind was dragging dry leaves across the stone.
“Do you have a minute?” he asked.
“I have five.”
“That’s probably more than I deserve.”
“Don’t make this easier on yourself by insulting yourself.”
He almost smiled. Then he didn’t.
“The prosecutors want my full cooperation. Every meeting, every transfer, every conversation I can remember with my parents. They said my cooperation would be considered.”
“Will you give it to them?”
“Yes.” He paused. “Unless you ask me not to.”
There it was. One more time, the old question. Would I carry it for them? Would I protect his parents? Protect the company? Protect Andrew from his own choices?
I heard Victor’s words in my head. Do not ask her to save him from consequences he helped create.
“Why would I ask you not to?”
“Because my parents might go to prison.”
“If the evidence supports that, I won’t ask anyone to hide it.”
“They’re still my parents. I’m not ready to stop loving them.”
“You don’t have to stop loving them,” I said. “You have to stop confusing love with obedience.”
He stood there for a long moment with his hands in his coat pockets.
“I learned that too late.”
“Yes.”
“I know you don’t want to hear any more apologies.”
“That’s not true,” I said. “I want an apology that doesn’t ask me to comfort you afterward. I want you to tell the truth even when it makes you look weak. I want every hidden asset returned. I want every lie in that settlement corrected. And I want you to understand that doing all of that will not save our marriage.”
He nodded slowly.
“I understand,” he said.
And for the first time, I believed he did.
