Beloved NBC News reporter Derrick Ward has passed away at the age of 62 due to complications from a recent cardiac arrest, prompting an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and friends on Wednesday.
Ward, a longtime correspondent for NBC’s Washington bureau, was remembered for his exceptional storytelling, warmth, and humor. “Derrick was an inspiration and a cherished member of our family and his hometown community,” said family friend Lydia Sermons in a statement. “As a distinguished journalist, his prolific writing and humor touched countless lives. Our entire family, especially our children, will miss him dearly.”
A native of Washington, D.C., Ward grew up in Marshall Heights and the H Street Corridor, experiencing and later documenting events like the city’s 1968 race riots. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Ward began his career at local stations WPFW, WAMU, and WTOP, where he covered major stories, including the Iran-Contra hearings and the 9/11 attacks. His television career began at WKBW-TV in Buffalo before he returned to Washington to join NBC in 2006.
Ward’s reporting often focused on human interest stories, shining a light on the struggles and resilience of D.C. residents. Some of his most memorable pieces included coverage of a burning D.C. building, a mother’s tribute to her son lost to addiction, and critical moments in the U.S. Senate. Beyond journalism, Ward was a passionate guitarist who frequently performed on stage. His final story aired on December 27.
