The California Lottery has announced the identity of another Powerball jackpot winner from last year, joining the ranks of billion-dollar prize recipients.
Yanira Alvarez secured the $1.08 billion jackpot in July 2023, following her visit to Las Palmitas Mini Market in downtown Los Angeles. This win came after 39 consecutive drawings without a winner.
Just three months later, another Californian, Theodorus Struyck, was part of a group that claimed the $1.765 billion Powerball jackpot. Struyck, as revealed by the lottery earlier this month, purchased the winning ticket from a retailer in Frazier Park in October 2023, following 36 consecutive drawings with no winner.
Alvarez and Struyck’s wins add to the streak of Californians snagging substantial Powerball jackpots. In 2022, a California Lottery player clinched the largest Powerball jackpot ever recorded, totaling an estimated $2.04 billion dollars.
The current Powerball jackpot for Friday night stands just under $1 billion, reaching $985 million, with a cash option of $452.3 million. This follows 37 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner.
