Fetterman Blames Pelosi For Devastating Harris Loss: ‘You Got What You Wanted’

Fetterman Blames Pelosi for Democrats’ 2024 Election Losses

Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman has publicly criticized former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, holding her partially responsible for the Democrats’ poor performance in the 2024 elections.

In an interview with Politico, Fetterman didn’t hold back when asked about President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race following a disastrous debate with Donald Trump.

“People like [Nancy] Pelosi really tried to — what’s the word I’m looking for? — play the ‘godmother’ role, acting as the enforcer,” Fetterman said. “Now she’s blaming Biden? Well, you can’t have it both ways. You got what you wanted,” he added, referencing Biden’s resignation and Vice President Kamala Harris’s subsequent candidacy. “And now you’re still blaming Biden.”

Democratic Party in Turmoil

Fetterman’s remarks highlight the ongoing divisions within the Democratic Party, as members blame one another for their failure to retake the House, losing the Senate, and Trump’s return to the White House. Pelosi, in particular, has faced backlash for her suggestion that Biden should not have immediately endorsed Harris, a decision she claims contributed to Harris’s defeat.

Fetterman also took aim at Pelosi’s continued leadership at age 84, calling it ironic and urging a generational shift within the party. “Why not give a younger generation an opportunity to occupy that seat?” he asked.

Criticism of Kamala Harris and Party Messaging

The Pennsylvania senator also criticized Harris and other Democrats for labeling Trump supporters as “fascists.”

“I love people who are going to vote for Trump. They’re not fascists,” Fetterman said. “Using terms like that doesn’t resonate with voters and makes it hard to walk back those statements. Scolding and pearl-clutching harder won’t work for Democrats.”

Pelosi Faces Calls to Step Aside

Pelosi, who recently filed for re-election in 2026 after securing her 20th term, is under pressure to step aside following the Democratic Party’s electoral losses. Teamsters International President Sean O’Brien and other prominent Democrats have called on both Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to make way for new leadership.

Last month, Pelosi submitted a statement of candidacy to the Federal Election Commission, though her office has not confirmed if she will seek another term.

Pelosi’s Role in Biden’s Withdrawal

Pelosi’s comments about Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 campaign have drawn criticism. In a recent New York Times podcast interview, Pelosi suggested that a more competitive selection process for Biden’s successor could have improved the Democrats’ chances against Trump.

After a lackluster debate performance and mounting concerns over his age, Biden stepped down in July and endorsed Harris. Reports indicate Pelosi had encouraged donors and other Democrats to “speak their conscience” if they had reservations about Biden’s campaign.

A House Democrat told NBC News at the time that the wave of public criticism against Biden was “all Nancy’s doing,” further fueling intra-party tensions.

As Democrats grapple with the fallout from their 2024 losses, the party faces a critical moment of reflection and potential change in leadership.
