Those were the things that needed tending to now.

I drank my coffee. The kitchen was warm. My son sat across from me, quiet in a way that was different from yesterday’s quiet — less managed, more real, the quiet of a person who has put something down and is finding out what his hands are like without it.

“Tell me about Oliver and Mia,” I said. “Tell me something true about them.”

He looked up.

“Oliver is afraid of birds,” he said. “Even small ones. He won’t say why.”

“And Mia?”

He smiled — small, unguarded, the smile of a father talking about a child he loves with the part of himself that doesn’t have to perform anything.

“She argues with everything,” he said. “Every single thing. Her teachers say it like it’s a problem.”

“It isn’t,” I said.

“No,” he said. “I know it isn’t.”

Outside, the fountain kept running, water over stone, ordinary and continuous.

We started there.
