The number comes up sometimes in conversations, when someone asks how the whole thing started, and he tells them, and they shake their heads at it, at the improbability of it, a rusted hulk worth fifteen dollars on a good day carrying thirty-two hundred in hidden currency and a deed to forty acres and a dead man’s final attempt at accounting for himself. It is a remarkable story, and Dale knows it. But when people say that the money and the land were the real treasure, he disagrees with them.

The real treasure was the conviction that the thing was worth fixing when everyone said it wasn’t. Everything else followed from that, the rebuilt engine and the running tractor and the reputation that grew from sixteen years of making difficult things work. The money and the deed were Clarence Hollister’s, placed in the machine by accident of grief and conscience, and they went where they needed to go, to families in crisis and a young farmer who needed a start and a daughter building her own operation across the Kansas line. Those things were good outcomes from a complicated starting point, and Dale is grateful for them, but they were not the point.

The point was a twenty-two-year-old man with seventy-five dollars and a land survey of what was possible that everyone else had drawn too small. The point was the long, unremarkable work of being right about something when the most comfortable option was to believe you had been wrong. The point was showing up in the workshop every evening and every weekend for three years until the engine ran, not because anyone was watching or applauding, but because the machine deserved better than what it had been given, and so did he.

The 1948 Farmall M is in a museum in Iowa now, in a room with other machines that have lasted longer than the circumstances that produced them. It still runs. The museum fires it up on special occasions, and the sound it makes is the sound of a well-maintained engine doing what it was built to do, steady and purposeful, the kind of sound that carries further than you expect.

In Dawson County, in the farming families who know the story, the number seventy-five still means something. It means the price of a decision that everyone said was wrong and that turned out to be the most consequential investment in the county’s recent memory, not because of the money hidden inside the engine, but because of the man who believed the machine was worth saving before he had any idea what was inside it.

That is the thing about worth. It is not always visible from the outside. Sometimes it is sealed up tight against the weather, waiting for someone with the patience and the stubbornness to do the work of finding it.
