The gift was expensive and thoughtful and entirely wasted, and I knew that before I got out of the car.

I had given her the professional answer at the time, something about clearly defined deliverables and scope boundaries.

I had bought it for the person I had believed she was.
I could afford the loss.
What I could not have afforded, and would not have recovered from cleanly, was continuing to be the person who bought gifts for people who toasted my absence.
That person had set herself down on a porch step in Omaha on a cold December night and had not come back in.
What had come back to the car was someone else: clearer, quieter, finished with the particular exhaustion of hoping that enough generosity would eventually produce the relationship it deserved.
Outside, the Christmas lights on the building across the street blinked on their timer, steady and indifferent.
I went to bed.
In January there would be a court date and decisions to make and conversations that would be difficult in the specific way of conversations between people who have stopped pretending.
