The codes we run before the family has been notified. The assessments made in the first ninety seconds when someone’s life depends on accuracy rather than performance.

Victoria called me just a nurse in a room full of people she wanted to impress. She meant it as a diminishment, a quick reductive phrase to bracket me into insignificance before the real introduction could proceed.

She did not understand what the words actually contained.

Just a nurse is the forty-seven minutes in the rain. It is the chest opened in the trauma bay and the life that walked out afterward. It is the grandmother in Room 4 who went home to her family because someone’s hands were fast enough. It is the stranger’s head held still in the dark until help arrived, and the pearl earrings described in careful detail so a dying man had something gentle to hold onto.

That is what just a nurse means.

And I have never been more certain of anything in my life.
