My daughter called me useless inside the very home I had opened to her. So I sold the house, drained the accounts, and reclaimed every dollar she had already spent inside her greedy little dreams. The terms were simple and they were absolute.
Neither child could access the principal before the age of twenty five. Before that, the trust would pay directly, to institutions, never to individuals, for their education, their medical care, and their housing if it were ever needed. Directly to the schools. Directly to the doctors. Directly to a landlord. Not one dollar would ever pass through their mother’s hands, or through any account she could reach, at any point, for any reason, under any circumstance.
And there was one more clause, the one that took Lillian’s legs out from under her, the one Adele and I had rewritten four times.
Lillian Ellington Vance was named in the document only once, and only to be excluded. She could not serve as trustee. She could not petition the trust. She could not receive funds on the children’s behalf. And should she attempt to contest the trust, or to pressure, coerce, or involve the children in any effort to break it, the protector was empowered to freeze all discretionary distributions except for direct educational and medical payments until each child reached twenty five.
In other words, she could not touch it. She could not fight it. And if she tried, the only thing she would accomplish was making her own children’s lives harder, and everyone including the children would eventually know it.
Lillian read it standing in the front hall. She read it a second time. And then she sat down on a packing box and looked up at me with an expression I had never seen on her face in forty two years.
“You gave everything to the kids,” she said.
“I did.”
“And nothing to me.”
“That’s right.”
“Mom.” Her voice cracked, and I do believe the crack was real, though I have never been certain what it was made of. “Mom, I’m their mother. I have to raise them. How am I supposed to raise them with nothing?”
And here is what I said, the sentence I had written down and practiced because I knew I would need it and knew I might not find it in the moment.
“The same way I raised you, Lillian. By working. By going without. By making a home out of very little and never once letting the child in it feel like a burden. I did that for eighteen years, and I did it well, and I never asked you to pay me back for a minute of it. You have your health, you have your education, you have two beautiful children, and you have a mother who fed you and clothed you and drove you to every practice and paid for a wedding you have since told me you regret. That is what I gave you. I gave you all of it already. You just decided it didn’t count, because the only thing you were counting was what would be left over when I died.”
She started to cry then, and I felt it pull at me, God knows I did. Fifty years of instinct screaming at me to cross that hall and gather her up. I did not move.
“I was in a bad place,” she said. “The divorce, Mom, you don’t know what it did to me. I said things I didn’t mean.”
“You said them for six months,” I said. “In front of your children. And you were not saying them to a stranger. You were saying them to your mother, in her kitchen, while she made your breakfast.” I picked up my handbag. “People say cruel things in bad places. That’s true. But cruelty repeated daily for half a year is not a bad place. It is a decision, and you made it every single morning, and you made it out loud.”
I stood in the doorway with my two suitcases waiting beside me.
“I am not disowning you, Lillian. I want you to hear that clearly, because you will tell yourself otherwise and you will tell other people otherwise. My phone number is not changing. If you want to write to me, I will read it. If you ever want to sit down and talk honestly about what happened in this house, I will get on a plane. What I will not do, ever again, is fund a life in which I am tolerated.”
Then I walked out of the house my husband built and got into the car and did not look back at the windows, because I knew if I looked I would see Ernest’s roses and I would not be able to leave.
I flew to Lisbon four days later. Then Porto, then a small town on the Douro where an old woman with bad Portuguese and worse knees could sit on a terrace above the river and drink coffee for an hour without anyone finding her breathing objectionable. I stayed six weeks and then went on to Seville. Then Kyoto in the spring. Then a long slow month in a village in County Clare where it rained every day and I did not mind at all.
I was seventy years old and I had never in my life been anywhere alone. Ernest and I had always meant to travel and always had a reason not to. I discovered, somewhere around Seville, that I was extremely good at being alone, and that the woman I had spent six months teaching to disappear had not actually gone anywhere. She had just been waiting for a room where no one flinched at her.
I wrote to Sophie and Ben every week. Real letters, with stamps, sent to their school address because Adele had thought of that too. I sent postcards of cathedrals and rivers and one memorably terrible photograph of a cow. Sophie wrote back in careful nine year old cursive and asked me questions about every country. Ben sent drawings. I have all of them.
Lillian did not write for eleven months.
Then, in the spring of the second year, a letter arrived at Adele’s office, forwarded to me in Ireland. It was four pages long. Most of it was explanation, which is not the same thing as apology, and I read those pages with the tired familiarity of a woman who has heard her daughter explain herself for four decades.
