My Daughter Sent Me to Pick Up Her Wedding Cake Then the Baker Said Another “Laura Mitchell” Had Ordered Her Not to Give It to Me

The hairdresser fixed Emma’s makeup in record time. She finished the other half of her hair. Emma put on her dress.

When I zipped it up the back, she turned around and looked at me in the mirror.

“Are you still mad at me?”

“A little,” I said honestly.

“Okay.” She nodded. “That’s fair.”

“But I’m a lot more proud of you than I’m mad.”

“Why?”

“Because you helped a man you love go find something he needed. Even when it was scary. Even when it might go badly.” I fixed a curl by her ear. “That’s what a good wife does. I just wish you’d let me help too.”

She hugged me so hard she almost wrinkled the dress.

David was waiting at the top of the stairs to walk her down the aisle.

He looked at me before they went.

“We’ll talk tonight,” I said. “Really talk.”

“Yes,” he said. “Whatever you want.”

“Right now, I want you to go walk our daughter down the aisle and not trip.”

He laughed. It was the first time I’d heard him laugh in a month.

A few hours later, Emma married Ryan.

Under the wooden arch in the field behind the old barn, with the sun going gold over the hills and a breeze moving through the tall grass.

Ryan cried when he saw her walking toward him. He cried through his vows. He laughed at himself for crying, and then cried some more. Emma held both his hands and didn’t let go.

Ryan’s father, Greg, sat in the front row on the groom’s side. Alone. He had no idea what had happened in the lobby that morning. Ryan told him later. Weeks later. That’s another story.

I sat in the front row on the bride’s side with David’s empty seat beside me, until he walked Emma down the aisle and came and sat down next to me.

He reached over and took my hand.

I let him.
