I’d like to tell you I felt triumphant.
I didn’t.
I felt like a tired woman at the end of a very long shift. The way I used to feel at the bus garage at six o’clock on a snow day, after every last child was home safe.
“Michael,” I said. “I’m going to ask you something. And I want the truth.”
He nodded. Stiffly.
“When I called you. When I told you I had nowhere to go. What did you feel?”
He took a long time to answer. His hands were flat on the bedsheet, and they weren’t quite steady.
“Annoyed,” he said finally. “God help me. That’s what I felt first. I thought, this is going to be a problem.”
“Not sad?”
“Not first.”
“And now?”
“Ashamed.” His voice cracked right down the middle. “Mom, I’d like to tell you I’d have done it differently if I’d known. I don’t know that I would have.”
“That’s honest,” I said.
“It’s all I’ve got.”
I turned to Stephanie.
She was crying openly now. Her mascara was running down her cheeks in two black lines. Ron handed her a napkin and she just held it.
“Mom. I panicked. When you called. I thought, if you needed money, we couldn’t. We have Ron’s firm, and the tennis, it’s so expensive, and the mortgage, and…”
She wiped her face with the back of her hand.
“I wasn’t thinking about you.”
“What were you thinking about?”
“Me,” she whispered. It came out broken. “Always me.”
I closed my eyes for a moment.
I thought about calamine lotion. “You Are My Sunshine.” Three nights in a row.
When I opened my eyes, Danny was still staring at the check in his hands. He hadn’t moved at all.
“Danny,” I said. “Look at the check, honey.”
He looked.
“That’s not the trust,” I said. “That’s yours. Eight hundred thousand dollars. Yours, outright. No strings. No conditions. Starting today.”
