The summer went by.
The food bank opened its renovated building in August. Brand-new roof. Brand-new walk-in freezers. A loading dock where the trucks could pull in without scraping the walls.
I went to the opening. Quietly. I stood in the back of the crowd in a sun hat and sunglasses.
Gerald gave a speech. His voice shook a little. He thanked the volunteers, and the city council, and the construction crew.
And he thanked “a private donor who asked not to be named, but who knows exactly who she is.”
A few people laughed.
I ate a piece of sheet cake out of a little plastic cup. I shook hands with some of the volunteers, a group of retired nurses who’d been sorting canned goods there every Wednesday for fifteen years.
Then I drove home before the local news crew showed up.
At Thanksgiving, Todd and Stacy and Penny came to my house.
My house. My table. My seating.
Stacy brought a bottle of wine and an apple pie she’d made herself. Todd told me later she’d practiced it twice the weekend before. The first one burned.
She came into my kitchen and helped without being asked. She mashed the potatoes. She stirred the gravy. She asked where I kept the serving spoons and then remembered on her own the second time.
She didn’t mention money. Not once.
She talked about a novel she was reading. A woman at her office who drove her crazy. A neighborhood project she’d gotten involved in, planting trees along their street.
I noticed that she was trying.
Trying is worth something.
Not everything. But something.
