My Parents Asked Me to Give Back the Farmhouse They Sold Me for $1 So I Moved My Divorced Brother and His Three Kids Into the Upstairs Rooms Instead

He came back carrying Cole.

Cole was mostly asleep, in his superhero pajamas. One sock on, one sock off. Jeff stood him up barefoot against the door frame. Right next to JEFF 5 1988.

Cole leaned his head back against the wood and blinked at the light.

“Stand up straight, bud,” Jeff whispered. “No tiptoes.”

He laid Mom’s old yardstick flat across the top of Cole’s head.

I handed him the pencil from my pocket. A mail carrier always has a pencil.

Jeff drew the line.

Then, in his big blocky handwriting, he wrote:

COLE 6 2026.

Cole’s line was an inch and a half higher than his daddy’s had been. At the same age.

“Is that good?” Cole mumbled.

“That’s real good, buddy,” Jeff said.

His voice broke clean in half.

“You’re gonna be bigger than me.”

He picked Cole up and carried him back across the hall to bed.

I stood there alone in that closet. And I looked at all those marks. Forty-three years of my family going up a door frame.

And one brand-new mark down at the bottom. In a different hand.

When Jeff came back, he didn’t say anything for a minute. We both just stood there in the dark with the phone light.

“Why are you doing this, Tam?” he finally said. “All of this. The room. The kids. Everything.”

I almost told him right then.

I almost said, Because Mom and Dad came out here Tuesday night and asked me to give you this house.

But I didn’t.

It wasn’t mine to tell. It was theirs.

“Because you’re my brother,” I said. “And because Pickles needed a dresser.”

He laughed. Quietly. So he wouldn’t wake Kenzie.

Then he hugged me. Right there in the closet. The first time he’d hugged me since Grandma Kirchner’s funeral.
