On My 60th Birthday, My Son and Daughter-in-Law Told Me to Hand Over My Pension and “Earn My Keep” Then I Put My Late Husband’s Recorder and the Property Deed on the Table

Mr. Collins set everything up so Arthur’s half of the house went straight to me when he died. A survivorship deed. Recorded with the Franklin County recorder. No probate. No dispute. No automatic share for Ryan.

The life insurance, a hundred and fifty thousand dollars from the union policy, went to me. Arthur’s pension from the electricians’ union went to me as his surviving spouse.

My own pension, from thirty-one years in the Westerville schools, is two thousand, eight hundred and sixty dollars a month. Through the School Employees Retirement System of Ohio.

Arthur died on a Tuesday morning in October of 2021. In our bedroom. Holding my hand.

The house became mine. Only mine. Sole owner.

Two weeks after the funeral, Ryan came over with Megan.

They sat on my couch. Megan held my hand. She had tears in her eyes.

“Helen, we just don’t want you to be alone in this big house,” she said. “It’s too much for one person. All the stairs. All the yard work. And what if something happens to you? What if you fall?”

“We were thinking,” Ryan said. “What if we moved in? Just for a while. To help you out. We’d give up our apartment. Leo could have his own room. And we’d all be together. Like a family.”

They were renting a two-bedroom apartment in Gahanna for nineteen hundred dollars a month. Leo was two.

I was so lonely that fall. So lonely I couldn’t breathe some nights. Arthur’s coffee mug was still on the drying rack. His boots were still by the back door.

So I said yes.

They moved in on the first of December, 2021.

“Just for a while,” Ryan said.

That was five years ago.
