Fifteen Years After My Father Threw Me Out, He Humiliated Me at My Sister’s Wedding Then the Bride Took the Microphone and Honored “Major General Evelyn”

“If it wasn’t for pity, nobody would have invited you.”

My father said it loud enough for every table around us to hear.

Silverware stopped. A waiter froze in the middle of the ballroom with a basket of bread rolls in both hands. Somebody’s laugh died halfway out.

Fifteen years. That’s how long it had been since Gerald Ulette changed the locks on his house and told me I wasn’t his daughter anymore. Fifteen years without one phone call. One birthday card. One word.

And the first full sentence he’d said to me in all that time was that one.

I picked up my glass of Pinot Noir. I took one slow sip. And I smiled at him.

He didn’t know what was about to happen.

Neither did I.

Twenty minutes later, my little sister would stand up at the head table in her wedding dress, walk to the microphone holding an envelope with the seal of the Department of the Air Force on it, look straight across two hundred and fifty guests at me, and say four words that would make my father’s wine glass stop halfway to his mouth.

“To Major General Evelyn…”

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Let me back up to the beginning of that night. To the first insult.

It came before dinner even started.
