I didn’t decide right away. I want to be honest about that.
For a week, I went back and forth. Some nights I’d lie awake thinking, Carol, you’re being petty. She’s your daughter. It’s just one summer. Let them have it.
Other nights, I’d think about my green chair under a tarp in the garage. And the combination lock on the side door that I didn’t know the code to.
Then, on the following Tuesday, Nancy called me again.
“Carol,” she said. “I wasn’t sure if I should tell you this. But I’d want somebody to tell me.”
“Tell me what?”
“I was putting together comparable sales for your property. Just to make sure the Harmons’ offer was fair. So I searched the vacation rental websites to see what cottages on the south shore are renting for this summer.” She paused. “Your cottage is listed.”
I sat very still.
“Listed where?”
“On VRBO. And on Airbnb. Since March. ‘Charming Restored Lakefront Cottage, Private Dock, Sleeps 8.’ Six hundred and fifty dollars a night. Three-night minimum.” Nancy took a breath. “Carol, July and August are almost completely booked.”
I put my hand flat on the kitchen table.
“Who listed it?”
“The host is a ‘Derek L.’ His profile picture is him on your dock, holding a fish.”
I couldn’t speak.
“I’m sending you the links right now,” Nancy said gently.
My phone buzzed. I opened the first link.
There it was. My cottage. My oak floors that I’d sanded on my hands and knees. My white porch. My dock, glowing gold in the sunset. My kitchen, with Jim’s old cast-iron skillet hanging on the wall.
And underneath the pictures, a description.
“Welcome to our family’s lakefront retreat! We lovingly restored this 1958 cottage ourselves over many years. Enjoy morning coffee on the porch and sunsets from our private dock. Note: Hosts live on-site in the converted garage apartment during the summer for your convenience.”
We lovingly restored this cottage ourselves.
I scrolled through the calendar. Booked from June 20th to July 5th. Booked from July 7th to July 28th. Booked almost every weekend through Labor Day.
I did the math the way I’ve done math for twenty-nine years.
Fifty-one nights booked. At $650 a night.
$33,150.
On my property. In my name. Without my knowledge.
They hadn’t asked me to stay away because Derek needed “personal space.”
They’d asked me to stay away because I’d have walked in on strangers sleeping in my bed.
