But I could not read the small print, and when I asked her to read it to me, she read it to me, and I trusted the voice of my own child more than I trusted my own squinting eyes.

I should have been here.” And I told him no, that the Sundays were a gift, that a son who calls every single Sunday for nineteen years without fail is not a son who was absent, and that the railings on the porch were worth more than a hundred visits, and we held hands across that table the way I once held Harold’s, and the house was full again, just for two weeks, and I held onto every minute.

Keep your own envelope. Whatever your envelope is, the deed, the trust, the will, the truth about who you are and what is yours, keep it somewhere with no logic to it, somewhere a person would have to truly know you to find, and never, ever sign what you have not read, no matter how tired your hand is and no matter how trusted the voice reading it aloud.
