My Nephew Called My Dead Brother’s Footlocker Just Old War Stuff Nobody Wants So I Opened It First

“It’s just old war stuff nobody wants, Uncle Ray. The dealer will give us cash today. Let him haul it off with the rest of the junk.”

That was Kurt, my brother’s own great-nephew, standing in the middle of the farmhouse where three generations of Stoltzes were born, and he was pointing at the one thing in that house I would have crawled across broken glass to protect. Gary’s footlocker. My brother’s Marine Corps footlocker. Olive drab, corners dented, his name and service number stenciled on the lid in white paint gone gray with fifty-two years of Wisconsin winters in an unheated upstairs bedroom. Sergeant Gary Stoltz, United States Marine Corps, killed in the Republic of Vietnam when he was twenty-three years old and I was sixteen and still believed the world made a kind of sense.

Kurt wanted forty dollars for it. That was the number the antiques man had quoted him. Forty dollars for the whole lot of what Kurt called the attic garbage, and my brother’s footlocker was part of the lot.

I want to tell you about that day, and about what was inside that footlocker, because for fifty-two years I thought I knew who my brother was. I was wrong. I was wrong in a way that has kept me up more nights than I can count since, and I need to set it down somewhere so it stops rattling around in me alone.

Let me start at the beginning, or as close to the beginning as matters.

My name is Raymond Stoltz. Everybody has called me Ray my whole life except my mother, who called me Raymond when she was disappointed in me, which was often enough that the full name still makes the back of my neck go cold. I am sixty-eight years old. I spent forty-one years driving a milk route and then a feed truck out of a small town in the western part of Wisconsin, the kind of town where the water tower has the high school’s mascot painted on it and the only stoplight blinks yellow after nine at night. I raised two kids there with my wife Dorothy, who passed four years ago and took a good deal of my daylight with her. I am telling you this so you understand I am not a dramatic man. I am not a man who invents feelings to have something to do. When I tell you what that footlocker did to me, I need you to know it is coming from somebody who has spent his whole life keeping his head down and his mouth shut.

The farmhouse belonged to my parents, Walter and Ada Stoltz, and before them to my grandfather. It sits on eighty acres that we stopped farming for real back in the eighties, though we always kept a garden and a few head of cattle for the freezer. My father died in 1991. My mother held on until this spring, ninety-six years old, sharp as a tack right up until the last month, and when she passed the house came to be settled among what was left of us.

What was left of us was not much and not close. My sister Bonnie died young. That left me, and it left my brother’s line, which is where Kurt comes from. Gary never married and never had children, of course, since he died at twenty-three, but our sister Bonnie had a son, and that son had Kurt, so Kurt is my grandnephew, though he has always just called me Uncle Ray and I have never bothered to correct the arithmetic.

Kurt is thirty-four. I want to be fair to him because a story where the other man is all bad and I am all good is not a true story, and I have promised myself this will be a true one. Kurt is not a monster. He is a young man who has been squeezed hard by a world that squeezes young men hard now. He has two little ones and a wife who works nights and a mortgage on a house that is worth less than he paid for it, and he has a way of talking about money that tells you money is a wolf that lives in his hallway and he can hear it breathing through the walls at night. I understand that. I have known that wolf. But understanding a man does not mean you let him sell your brother for forty dollars.

I need to tell you one more thing before I tell you about the day, because it sat differently with me after everything, and it may be the saddest part of the whole business.

In the last year of my mother’s life I drove out to see her most Sundays. She was in the home in town by then, not the farmhouse, but her mind ran on the farmhouse the way an old dog runs in its sleep, and she talked about Gary more at the end than she had in fifty years. Not the facts of him. She never gave me facts. She would just say his name, “Gary,” the way you say a word you have worn smooth, and she would look toward the window. One Sunday, near the end, she took my hand with her little papery grip and she said, “Raymond, there’s things in that room I should have shown you.” I asked her what things. She had a spell of the confusion by then, more days than not, and she drifted, and I did not push her because you learn not to push them. I thought it was the fog talking. I said, “It’s all right, Ma.” I have thought about that “it’s all right” more than almost anything. She was trying to hand me my brother across fifty years and I patted her hand and told her it was all right and changed the subject to the weather. She died three weeks later. She knew what was in that box. She had known for fifty-two years, and at the very end she tried to give it to me, and I was too tired and too used to her drifting to hear her. I will carry that. A man ought to carry the things he gets wrong.

The cleanout got scheduled for a Saturday in June. The plan, worked out mostly over the phone with Kurt doing most of the talking, was that we would go through the house, keep what had real value, and let a fellow Kurt knew, an antiques and estate man named Denny, come through and make an offer on the rest before we called the dumpster people. Kurt kept using the word “efficient.” He wanted it efficient. He had taken a day off he could not afford and he wanted the house emptied and a check in his hand by supper.

I drove out that morning with a thermos of coffee and a bad feeling I could not name. The lane up to the house was overgrown, the mailbox leaning, the porch step I had meant to fix for a decade finally gone soft and rotted through. I sat in the truck for a minute before I went in. I do that now, at my age. You get to where you have to gather yourself before you walk into a house full of dead people you loved.

Inside it smelled like my mother, like liniment and coffee and the particular mustiness of a house that has held the same air a long time. Kurt was already there, and so was Denny, a heavyset man in a canvas vest with a lot of pockets, walking through the front rooms with the flat appraising look of a man deciding what things are worth to him and not what they are worth to you.

We started downstairs. It went fine, mostly. The furniture was old but not the good kind of old, Denny said, and he made an offer on a few pieces and passed on the rest. My mother’s dishes went to my daughter, who wanted them, and that was a small mercy. The clock from the mantel I took for myself. It has a chip in the face and it runs eleven minutes fast and I would not trade it for a new car.

Then we went upstairs.

The upstairs of that house had four small bedrooms under a low slanted roof, and the one at the end of the hall, the north room, had been Gary’s. After he died my mother closed it. I do not mean she cleaned it out and repurposed it. I mean she closed the door and for fifty-two years that room stayed almost exactly as it was the last morning Gary walked out of it. His bed was made the way he made it, tight, Marine-tight, though the quilt had gone thin and spotted. His high school pennant was still tacked to the wall, curled at the corners. And at the foot of the bed sat the footlocker.

I had not been in that room in years. Decades, maybe. My mother did not welcome company in there and after a while you stop asking. Standing in the doorway that Saturday morning, sixty-eight years old, I felt sixteen again in the worst possible way, like the floor had tilted and I was sliding back toward the day the two Marines in dress blues came up our lane and my mother made a sound I have never heard another human being make before or since.

Kurt did not feel any of that. Why would he? He never knew Gary. To Kurt, Gary is a name on a wall at the courthouse and a black-and-white photograph on my mother’s dresser, a young man in a uniform who has always been dead. Kurt walked into that room, looked around at fifty-two years of a mother’s grief kept in amber, and said, “Okay, this is the stuff Denny can take.”

“No,” I said.

I surprised myself with how fast it came out and how hard.

Kurt turned around. “Uncle Ray, come on. It’s a closed-up room full of old junk. The bed, the dresser, the trunk, all of it. Denny, what’ll you give for the room?”

And Denny, God bless him, actually looked uncomfortable, because Denny had been doing estate work for thirty years and Denny knew what he was looking at even if Kurt did not. Denny looked at the footlocker and he looked at me and he said, “The trunk’s a military footlocker. Those have some collector value depending. I’d have to see inside.”

“You’re not seeing inside,” I said.

Kurt made a sound, half a laugh, the sound a young man makes when he has decided the old man is being difficult for no reason. “It’s a footlocker, Ray. It’s forty bucks. Denny said the whole upstairs for forty. It’s just old war stuff nobody wants. We could use the forty.”

Just old war stuff nobody wants.

I have turned that sentence over so many times since. I know Kurt did not mean it the way it landed. To him it was true. It was a trunk of a dead stranger’s belongings gathering mildew in an attic, and there was a wolf in his hallway, and forty dollars was forty dollars. But standing in my dead brother’s bedroom hearing my grandnephew price my brother’s life at the cost of a tank of gas, something came up in me that I did not have a name for and still do not, something older than anger.

I did not yell. I have never been a yeller. My father was a yeller and I decided young I would not be. I just said, very quietly, “Everybody get out of this room. I’ll go through this myself.”

Kurt started to argue and Denny, who understood, put a hand on his arm and steered him toward the stairs. “Let him have a minute with it,” Denny said. “I’ll look at the barn.”

And then it was just me and the footlocker.

I want to tell you that I opened it right away but I did not. I sat down on the edge of Gary’s bed, on the tight thin quilt, and I looked at that olive drab trunk for a long time. The truth is I was afraid of it. I had spent fifty-two years with a particular version of my brother in my head and some animal part of me knew that whatever was in that box might change him, and I did not know if I could survive my brother changing after I had already survived him dying.

You see, I need to tell you what I thought I knew about Gary.

Gary was seven years older than me. When you are the little brother by seven years, your big brother is not quite a person to you, he is a weather system, a thing that happens to you and around you. Gary was big and loud and quick with his hands and quicker with a joke. He was the kind of boy our town produces and then loses, good at football and better at leaving. He worked at the canning plant after high school and he was restless in a way that scared our mother, and when he came home one night in 1969 and announced he had walked into the recruiting office in the county seat and signed up for the Marines, our father was proud and our mother cried and I, sixteen and stupid, thought it was the most glamorous thing a human being had ever done.

He was gone for training and then he was home once, briefly, on leave, in his uniform, and I remember the whole town treating him like he had grown ten feet tall. And then he was in Vietnam and then there were letters, and then the letters stopped, and then the two men came up the lane.

The story of Gary that hardened in our family over the years, the story my mother told and my father told and that I came to believe, was this: Gary was a good boy who did his duty and died young and it was a waste and a tragedy and there was nothing more to say. He was frozen at twenty-three, a photograph, a name. Nobody talked about the specifics of how he died because nobody knew the specifics. The government tells you very little. He was killed in action. That was the sum of it. A good boy, a waste, a closed door at the end of a hall.

That is the brother I had. A weather system that stopped. A tragedy with his name on it.

So I sat on his bed and I was afraid, and then I got down on my knees on the plank floor, the way you get down at my age, carefully, one joint at a time, and I unlatched the footlocker.

The latches were stiff with rust and I had to work them. When the lid came up it exhaled, a smell of old canvas and cedar and something faintly like the inside of a church. My mother had put cedar blocks in there. Even in her grief, or maybe especially in it, she had thought to protect what was inside from the moths. That detail nearly finished me before I had looked at a single thing.

On top was his uniform, folded. Not the dress blues, those he was likely buried in or lost overseas, but his utility uniform, and I lifted it out and held it and it weighed nothing at all. Underneath were the ordinary things. A shaving kit. A few paperback books swollen with damp, westerns, the kind of thing a young man reads to pass the time. A harmonica, which I did not know he played. A church key bottle opener. His high school class ring, which my mother must have put there.

And then, under a folded shelter half, I found the letters. And the letters are where my brother stopped being the man I thought he was and became someone I am still learning.

They were bundled with kitchen twine, dozens of them, and at first I thought they were the letters he had sent home, which we had, my mother kept those separate. But these were different. These were letters written to Gary, and letters Gary had written and never sent, and they were not to us.

I need to be careful here, because these were private, and even now I feel like a trespasser telling it. But my brother has been dead fifty-two years and there is no one left to protect, and I have come to believe that the biggest disservice we did him was not knowing.

There was a village. I am not going to try to spell its name because I would spell it wrong and my brother deserves better than a wrong name. It was a village near where Gary’s unit was posted, and in that village there was an orphanage, a Catholic orphanage run by two nuns and a handful of local women, full of children the war had made parentless, and my brother, Sergeant Gary Stoltz, big loud restless Gary who could not sit still in church, had spent every scrap of his liberty and a good deal of his own money on those children.

The letters told it in pieces and I had to assemble it like a man doing a puzzle with his hands shaking. There were letters from one of the nuns, in careful mission-school English, thanking him. Thanking him for the medicine he had somehow gotten hold of when a fever went through the little ones. Thanking him for the boots, for the rice, for the money he sent even from the small pay of a sergeant. There was a letter that described how Gary had organized the other men in his unit, shamed them and charmed them and browbeat them into building a proper roof on the orphanage before the monsoon came, hauling the materials himself on days he should have been sleeping.

And there were the photographs.

I had to sit back down on the bed when I found the photographs. There was my brother, my weather-system brother, kneeling in the dirt of a country half a world away, and he was surrounded by children, a dozen of them, and they were climbing on him and hanging off his arms and he was laughing, laughing with his whole face the way he did at our supper table when he was a boy, and one tiny girl, no more than three, was asleep against his chest with her fist curled in his uniform, and my brother had his big hand cupped around the back of her head the way you hold something you have decided to keep safe with your life.

There were letters he had written and not sent, to our mother, that he must have thought better of. In one he tried to explain the orphanage to her and then crossed half of it out, and what he left said only, “Ma, there are kids here that nobody in the world is coming for. Somebody has to come for them. I decided it might as well be me. Don’t tell Pa I’ve gone soft.”

My brother, who our father raised to believe softness was the one unforgivable sin, had found a soft place inside himself in the worst place on earth, and he had been ashamed of it, and he had kept it in a box, and my mother had found it after he died and she had kept the box closed for fifty-two years, and I do not know to this day whether she kept it closed because she could not bear to look or because she was protecting the version of Gary our father needed to believe in. I will never know. She is gone too.

But here is the thing that broke me all the way open, and it was near the bottom of the footlocker, wrapped in a handkerchief.

It was a medal. Not one of the standard service medals, though those were there too, in a small box, the ones the government sends. This was a different one. It came with a citation on onionskin paper, folded into eighths, and I read it three times before I could take it in.

My brother had died pulling children out of a building.

That was the specific of it, the specific nobody in my family ever knew. There had been an attack on the village. The orphanage was hit. And Sergeant Gary Stoltz, who was not even on duty, who was there on his own liberty because he could not stay away from those children, had gone back into a burning collapsing building four times and carried children out, and on the fifth time it came down on him.

The citation used the cold official language they use, words like conspicuous gallantry and disregard for his own safety, but underneath the cold words was my brother, twenty-three years old, going back into the fire a fifth time for children who were not his, in a country that was not his, because somebody had to come for them and he had decided it might as well be him.

He saved eleven children. The citation gave the number. Eleven.

And my family thought he was a good boy who died in a waste of a war and there was nothing more to say. And my grandnephew wanted to sell the proof of who he actually was for forty dollars to a man in a canvas vest.

I do not know how long I knelt on that floor. Long enough that Kurt came looking for me. He came up the stairs and stopped in the doorway and I heard him say my name, “Uncle Ray?”, in a different voice than he had been using all morning, because I was an old man kneeling on the floor of a dead boy’s room with tears running off my chin onto a fifty-two-year-old uniform, holding a medal in one hand and a photograph in the other.

I did not yell at Kurt. I want you to know that. I had every right to and I did not, because yelling at Kurt would have made it about my anger and it was not about my anger. I motioned him in. I made him get down on the floor next to me, this thirty-four-year-old man with a wolf in his hallway, and I put the photograph in his hands, the one of Gary laughing with the sleeping girl’s fist in his uniform, and I said, “That’s the old war stuff nobody wants.”

And I watched my grandnephew’s face change. I watched him look at the man in the photograph, really look, and I watched him understand that the thing he had priced at forty dollars was a person, a person from his own blood, a young man who had done the single most important thing a human being can do, which is to decide that a stranger’s child is worth your one and only life.

Kurt started to cry. I had never seen him cry. He held that photograph and he said, “I didn’t know. Ray, I swear to God, I didn’t know.”

“Nobody knew,” I told him. “That’s the tragedy. Not that he died. That we let him die twice, once over there and once every time we called him just a good boy and closed the door.”

We went through the rest of the footlocker together, the two of us on the floor, and I told Kurt everything I knew about Gary, which was not much and was suddenly not enough, and Kurt told me he was sorry, over and over, and I told him to stop apologizing to me and start listening to who his blood was.

Denny, the estate man, came up after a while to see what was keeping us. He stood in the doorway and he saw the two of us on the floor and the medal and the letters spread out, and Denny, thirty years in the business of pricing what people leave behind, took his cap off. He just took his cap off and stood there. Then he said, very quietly, “I’ll take the furniture off your hands for what I offered. The trunk and everything in it isn’t for sale. Don’t ever let anybody tell you different.” And he went back downstairs and left us to it.

I took the footlocker home that day. It rode in the bed of my truck wrapped in a moving blanket like the most precious cargo in the state of Wisconsin, which it was. It sits now in my own front room where I can see it from my chair.

I have spent the months since doing the thing my family failed to do for fifty-two years. I have been finding out who my brother was. I have written letters of my own, to the Marine Corps, to a veterans’ organization that helps families, to a woman who researches these things. I have been trying to find those children, who are not children anymore, who are grandparents now themselves if they are living, in a country half a world away. Eleven of them, that my brother pulled out of the fire.

I have learned things I never expected to learn about the young man who was my weather system. I have learned that the softness he was ashamed of was the best and truest thing about him, and that our father, who taught him to be ashamed of it, was wrong about the one thing that matters most in this world. I have learned that grief kept in a closed room for fifty-two years does not preserve a person, it erases them, and that the only way to honor the dead is to know them, all the way, the soft parts and the hard parts and the parts they hid in a box because they thought you would not understand.

And I have learned that I almost lost him a second time to a wolf in a hallway and a man with a canvas vest and a forty-dollar offer, and that the only thing that stood between my brother and that dumpster was an old man’s bad feeling in a truck cab and one word, said quietly, “No.”

Kurt comes around more now. He brings the little ones. Last week his boy, who is six, asked me about the trunk in my front room, and I got down on the floor with him, one joint at a time, and I opened it, and I took out the photograph of a laughing young man with a sleeping child’s fist curled in his uniform, and I said, “This is your great-great-uncle Gary. He was a Marine. Let me tell you what he did.”

That is what the footlocker was for. Not forty dollars. That.

There is more to it, more than I can fit here, the medal and its full citation, and what I finally found out about the eleven children, and the letter that arrived at my house this fall from the other side of the world that I have read so many times the fold is wearing through. But the shape of it is this: my brother was a better man than any of us knew, and we almost threw the proof of it in a dumpster, and one closed footlocker in an attic held the whole truth of a life we had reduced to a photograph and a closed door.

Open the box. Whatever box it is in your family, the one nobody has looked in, the one somebody wants to sell or haul off or forget. Open it first. You may find that the person you lost was someone you never got to meet, and that meeting them is not too late, even now, even fifty-two years late.

I did. And I would not trade what I found for every dollar in the world.
