Something broke open in my chest. Thirty-four years of silence, all at once.
“You told the whole world I wasn’t your blood,” I said. My voice was shaking. “You humiliated me in front of everybody you know. But the truth is, I am your blood. And you’ve spent my entire life pretending I’m not.”
I took a step toward the desk.
“You’re the coward. Not me.”
Richard staggered back in his leather chair. One hand went to his chest. His face went red. His breathing came ragged and uneven.
But he still forced the words out. With all the stubbornness he had left.
“I will never call you my son.”
I stood there in the middle of his empire of law books and trophies. And I watched him come apart.
And my rage slowly gave way to something heavier.
Pity.
Sorrow.
Grief for something that would never, ever be.
I took a long, steady breath.
“I don’t need you to call me your son,” I said. “I’ll build my own legacy. One you’ll never touch.”
I turned around and walked out of that study.
I left him there in the glow of the desk lamp, surrounded by torn paper and tape, and a legacy collapsing under the weight of its own lies.
Margaret was standing in the hallway outside the door. She’d heard all of it.
Her face was wet.
“Ethan,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry. I wanted to tell you. So many times.”
I stopped in front of her.
“You used to tell me I came from your heart,” I said.
“You did,” she said. “You still do.”
“Then why did you let him do this to me?”
She couldn’t answer.
I walked past her and out the front door.
