Two weeks after I moved to Decatur, Patricia showed up on my front porch.
She looked different. All that confidence was gone. She was holding a small Target bag.
“I brought some things for the baby.”
I thanked her. But I didn’t invite her in right away.
She looked at me.
“I owe you an apology, Claire.”
I waited.
“I thought I was protecting my son.”
“You were protecting what you thought he deserved,” I said.
She nodded slowly.
“I suppose that’s true.”
She wiped her eyes.
“I convinced him the house should belong to both of you. And then I convinced him you’d eventually just give in. Because women do. Because I always did.”
I didn’t say anything.
“I was wrong,” Patricia said.
It was the first thing she’d said to me in a very long time that didn’t put part of the blame on me.
I stepped aside.
“You can come in.”
She came in very quietly.
And for the first time, Patricia held her granddaughter without giving me a single instruction. She didn’t criticize the nursery. She didn’t say anything about the size of the house.
She just looked down at Lily.
“She has your eyes,” she whispered.
“She does.”
“I know I can’t undo what I did.”
“No. You can’t.”
“But I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
I believed she meant it. In that moment.
I didn’t suddenly feel close to her. I didn’t forget the envelope. Or the typed statement on the coffee table. Or her laughing in the garage. She’ll be too busy with the baby to notice.
But I accepted the apology.
Those are two different things.
