My Daughter’s First Boyfriend Told Her to Shave Her Arms Because They Looked “Like a Man’s” Then My Husband Invited Him to Dinner

Daniel opened his arms. And she went straight into them.

He held her right there in the middle of the living room, rocking a little, the way he used to when she was a baby with colic and wouldn’t stop crying at two in the morning.

“I still like him,” she sobbed into his shirt.

“I know, honey. I know you do.”

“Then why does breaking up feel so awful?”

Daniel rested his chin on top of her head.

“Because making the right decision doesn’t always make it easy,” he said. “Sometimes it’s the hardest thing in the world.”

I came over and sat down on the arm of the couch next to them. I rubbed Emma’s back in little circles.

After a while, she pulled away and wiped her cheeks with the heels of her hands.

“Do you think I was mean?” she asked. “To him?”

“No,” I said. “You weren’t mean. You were honest about what you need. That’s not the same thing at all.”

“He looked so sad.”

“He probably is sad. But you know what, honey? He’ll be okay. And so will you.”

For the next two weeks, Emma was quieter than usual.

She missed Tyler. Some nights I heard her crying a little through her bedroom door. Some days she came home from school and went straight up to her room and played sad music.

Sometimes she wondered out loud if she’d been too hard on him.

“Maybe I should have given him another chance,” she said one night at dinner, pushing her peas around.

Daniel never once told her she was wrong to miss Tyler. He never said, “Good riddance.” He never called Tyler a jerk.

He just reminded her, gently, whenever it came up, that caring about somebody didn’t mean you had to stay in something that made you feel small.

“You can care about him from over here,” he said, holding his hand out to the side. “You don’t have to stand right next to him to wish him well.”
