My Daughter’s First Boyfriend Told Her to Shave Her Arms Because They Looked “Like a Man’s” Then My Husband Invited Him to Dinner

Daniel didn’t ask Tyler what he thought about my story. He didn’t look at him pointedly. He didn’t make a speech.

He just picked his fork back up and said, to nobody in particular, “It’s funny, isn’t it? How one person’s opinion can stick with you for years. Long after that person stops mattering at all.”

And then he asked Jacob about his soccer game.

The conversation moved on. Like nothing had happened.

But Tyler was quieter for the rest of dinner. Much quieter. He answered when someone asked him something. He said “please” and “thank you.” But he kept his eyes on his plate, and he kept his left hand in his lap.

For dessert, we had the grocery store cookies with vanilla ice cream. Tyler only ate one.

After dessert, Emma helped me wrap up the leftover lasagna. Daniel and Tyler carried the dishes to the kitchen.

I stood at the counter with the plastic wrap, and I listened as hard as I could.

“So when’s your next game?” Daniel asked.

“Thursday. Against Westfield.”

“They any good?”

“They’ve got a big center. Like six-five.”

“Well, box him out.”

“Yes, sir.”

That was it. Nothing more. Not one word about Emma. Not one word about arms.

At 7:45, Tyler said he should get home. He thanked Daniel for the lasagna. He thanked me for having him. He said “See ya, little man” to Jacob, who looked like he’d just been knighted.

Emma walked him to the front door.

I didn’t watch. I wanted to. I made myself put the lasagna in the fridge instead.

When Emma came back into the kitchen, she looked disappointed.

“Everything okay?” I asked.

“Yeah.”

“Did he say anything?”

“He said thanks for dinner.”

“Did he apologize?”

She looked surprised.

“No. Why would he? You didn’t tell him anything.”

I glanced at Daniel. He was wiping down the counter with a dish towel, very slowly.

Emma leaned against the refrigerator.

“Maybe he needs to hear it from me,” she said quietly.

Daniel stopped wiping.
