The Certified Letter Had Barely Been Sent When My Phone Started Ringing

“Two.”

I turned to Sarah.

“You’ll invite your father to dinner. A Sunday dinner. At your new house. With me there too.”

She stared at me.

“I’d like to meet him properly,” I said. “Without a turkey between us.”

She laughed. A startled, wet little sound. She covered her mouth.

“And three.”

I looked at my son.

“You call me. Once a week. For no reason at all. For one year.”

“Mom…”

“For no reason, Danny. Not because you need something. About a book you’re reading. A bird you saw. A funny thing a customer said. A ballgame. Anything.”

I held his eyes.

“And I’ll be able to tell, Danny. Don’t think I won’t. I was a school secretary for thirty-one years. I know when a child is reading from a card.”

He put his face in his hands again.

And this time, he laughed. Helplessly. And cried at the same time. His shoulders were shaking.

Sarah put her arm around him. She leaned her head on his shoulder.

And I got up and got the coffee pot. Because somebody had to. And because I needed to turn around for a minute so they wouldn’t see my face.
