My Mother-in-Law Fired Me From the Tech Company I Helped Build Three Months Later, One Patent Question Stopped Her Investor Presentation Cold

Victoria taught me one last lesson. She didn’t mean to. But she did.

Success isn’t only about having the right patents, or the right technology, or the right contract. It’s about knowing what you’re worth. And being brave enough to say it out loud, in a room full of people who’d rather you didn’t.

I’d almost let her convince me I was just the girl who tinkered.

I’m glad I didn’t.

That afternoon, when I came back from a meeting, there was a small package sitting on my desk. Brown paper. No return address. Just my name, written in handwriting I’d know anywhere.

I opened it.

Inside, wrapped in tissue paper, was a clunky little robot made of soldered copper wire and a nine-volt battery.

The one I built in my dorm room at nineteen. The one that could walk four steps before it fell over.

I’d forgotten it. That last day, when I packed my box, it must have been sitting on the shelf behind my door. I never noticed it was gone. And Victoria’s security people had never mailed it back, the way she’d promised.

Someone had gone and found it.

There was a note folded underneath it.

Found this in a box in Mother’s storage room. Thought it belonged with its creator. Thank you for teaching me what a real business looks like. — D.

I sat there for a long time holding that silly little robot.

Then I put in a fresh nine-volt battery. I set it on my desk, right in front of my framed patents. And I flipped the switch.

It took four steps.

And then, for the first time in thirteen years, it took a fifth.

I’d have to look at the wiring later. Figure out why.

That’s the thing about real work. There’s always something new to figure out.
