Luca didn’t sell his restaurant business to a stranger.
He sold it to his head chef, Marco Bianchi. Marco is forty-three. He’s worked in the kitchen at Taivera Luca since he was nineteen, washing dishes. Luca taught him every recipe himself.
I gave Marco the first six months of rent free while he got established.
And Greg?
Luca met with him the morning after my dinner with Dad. I wasn’t there. Luca told me about it later.
Greg admitted everything. The phone call from Vanessa. The hundred dollars. He said he believed her. A well-dressed woman, nicely spoken, worried about her elderly father’s safety.
“I didn’t ask any questions,” Greg told Luca. “She sounded so sure.”
Luca told me he almost fired him.
“But then I thought,” Luca said, “how many people in that family also did not ask any questions? Your father. Your brother. Your aunts. Everybody believed her. Greg is a manager, not a detective. His sin was the same as everybody else’s. He did not ask.”
So Luca gave Greg a choice.
He could resign. Or he could write a letter of apology to Michael Callaway and give the hundred dollars to charity.
Greg wrote the letter. Two pages. Handwritten.
He donated the hundred dollars to the Central Virginia Food Bank. He sent me the receipt.
At the end of his letter, he wrote one line I’ve never forgotten.
“In twenty-two years in this business, I’ve told a lot of people to take the hint. I never once asked myself whose hint it was.”
Marco kept him on as manager. Greg is still there.
Every time I walk in, he greets me by name. And he asks how my father is.
