Denny didn’t sell it right away.

He stood up on that hay rack in the wind with the microphone hanging down at his side. And he looked out over the crowd for what felt like a full minute.

He looked at Dale Wiese. At the young couple with the baby. At the land company man.

And he looked all the way to the back of the yard. To the man in the gray church coat standing by the mailbox.

Then he lifted the microphone.

“It’s the Brandt place, folks,” he said.

His voice was rough.

“Three hundred and one thousand, five hundred. Going once.”

The wind blew.

“Going twice.”

He brought his hand down flat on the folding table.

“Sold. Bidder 47.”

Nobody cheered.

Hailey ran across the yard and grabbed me around the waist so hard I almost fell over.

The land company man came over too. He shook my hand.

“Good luck to you,” he said.

And he meant it. And he got in his truck and drove back to Grand Island.

When I looked down toward the mailbox again, Walt wasn’t there.
