I signed the purchase agreement at the folding table inside the machine shed. Denny’s wife walked me through it line by line.

I wrote a check for thirty thousand, one hundred and fifty dollars. The ten percent down.

My hand was steady for that. Which surprised me.

When I came back out, Denny was up on the hay rack winding the microphone cord around his elbow and his hand. He waved me over.

I climbed up on the tire to get closer to him.

“Amy,” he said. “I’m going to tell you something. And then I’m not ever going to say it again. Because it isn’t mine to say.”

“All right,” I said.

“Walt drove out here once a month for four years,” Denny said. “Just pulled up at the end of the drive and sat there in his pickup. Then he’d stop by my place on the way home. Have a cup of coffee. And tell me what he saw.”

He looped the cord around his elbow one more time.

“The ditch mowed along the yard. The mailbox post set back up in concrete. June’s lilacs watered all summer long. The shingles picked up off the grass.”

He looked straight at me.

“He knew whose pickup it was, Amy. He saw it out here more than once. And he drove on by.”

I didn’t say anything.

I couldn’t have.

“He never told you, did he,” Denny said.

“No.”

“No,” Denny said. “He wouldn’t. He didn’t know how.”

He hung the coiled cord on a nail on the hay rack.

“He’s been carrying something a long time, Amy. You go on and let him tell you. He’s out behind the barn.”
