The engagement gala was everything Sutton had ever wanted.
Two hundred guests in the Alta Aspen’s smaller ballroom. Crystal chandeliers. Ice sculptures carved into intertwined initials. S and T. A string quartet playing in the corner.
My parents worked the room like people hosting a triumph.
Sutton took the microphone and thanked them, in front of everybody, for their “incredible generosity.” She didn’t say where the money came from. Sutton has the specific social instinct that lets certain people accept stolen gifts without ever quite asking about the source.
My mother dabbed her eyes.
My father accepted backslaps from men in tailored jackets.
Trip stood near the bar, showing his watch to a friend.
Then Sutton smiled out at the crowd.
“And now, I have a surprise,” she said. “My big sister, Isela, is here tonight. And she has something special to share.”
I was apparently the evening’s big moment. The estranged older sister, newly reconciled, here to bless the wedding in front of two hundred witnesses.
My mother had arranged it. I’d heard her say it on the phone. “The optics we need.”
I walked across the polished floor toward the little stage.
My father appeared at my right side. He had a folded document in one hand and a gold pen in the other.
The waiver. Dressed up as a heartwarming gesture.
His smirk was subtle. He was savoring it.
“Right here, sweetheart,” he murmured, unfolding it. “Just sign at the bottom.”
And then Beckett stepped forward.
He reached right past my father and took the microphone out of Sutton’s hand. With the absolute, unhurried authority of a man who owns the building.
Which, as of Thursday, he did.
“Sutton,” he said. His voice was pleasant and completely certain. “Could you check your email for a moment?”
