Sutton frowned. She took her phone out of her clutch. She scrolled.
And I watched the color drain out of her face.
The specific way color leaves a face when what you’re reading is a cancellation notice. From the venue where you paid a nonrefundable deposit. Telling you that under new management, your wedding reservation has been terminated under the resort’s updated guest conduct policy.
“Why is my reservation canceled?”
Her voice came out small. Then it cracked. Then it split into something that wasn’t quite a scream.
“Why is my WEDDING canceled?”
Beckett’s smile didn’t change at all.
“Because I ordered it canceled,” he said into the microphone. “My name is Beckett Sterling. I’m the CEO of Sterling Hospitality Group. We completed our acquisition of the Alta Aspen Resort’s parent company on Thursday afternoon.”
The ballroom went completely silent.
Two hundred people stopped breathing.
The string quartet lowered their bows.
Then the big screen behind the DJ booth lit up. The one that had been playing a slideshow of Sutton and Trip’s engagement photos.
Beckett’s communications director had quietly connected her laptop during cocktail hour, while my father was busy accepting backslaps.
On that screen, blown up large enough for every single person in the room to read:
The transfer records from my trust. Three times sixteen thousand dollars.
The forged consent memo, with its creation date four days after the first transfer. And my mother’s name on the authorization line.
The corporate acquisition papers. Sterling Hospitality Group. Alta Aspen Resort.
And in the bottom corner, Marcus Webb’s forensic summary. Dated. Certified.
“Our company maintains strict anti-fraud and anti-corruption policies for our guests and partners,” Beckett said. “Documented intent to conceal these transfers from the beneficiary of a trust qualifies as fraud under those policies.”
He looked at my sister.
“Sutton Cook and Trip Johnson are now banned from every Sterling property. All one hundred and thirty-seven of them. And the seven in development.”
Over by the bar, Trip stopped smiling.
