Over the next two weeks, we figured out the new routine.
Mark’s early mornings. My afternoons. Noah’s two days at Little Sprouts with Waffles. Pickups at five-thirty sharp.
It wasn’t easy. Some nights we were both so tired we ate cereal for dinner.
But it was ours.
On the second Thursday, Diane texted Mark. She wanted to know if she could come over for Sunday lunch.
I watched him read the text at the kitchen counter.
And then I watched him walk across the kitchen. And hold his phone out to me.
“Mom wants to come Sunday,” he said. “What do you think?”
He hadn’t answered her yet.
He was asking me first.
It was such a small thing. A text message. A Sunday lunch.
But I had to turn around and look out the window for a second.
“Lunch would be nice,” I said.
She came at noon. She brought a fresh tin of snickerdoodles.
She sat at our kitchen table and helped Noah build a whole new zoo out of couch cushions in the living room afterward. The walrus came back. So did the pelican.
At lunch, she took a scoop of potato salad with the serving spoon. Put it on her plate. And set the spoon back on the little dish next to the bowl.
She didn’t say anything about it.
Neither did I.
But Mark caught my eye across the table. And he smiled.
