My MIL Kept Licking the Serving Spoon and Putting It Back in Our Food Then My Husband Finally Taught Her a Lesson

My next shift was Tuesday. Then Thursday. Both from noon until six.

I reached for my phone on the counter. Already running through names in my head. My sister. The woman down the street who sometimes watched kids. The sitter we used before.

And Mark said, “Could you just move your hours for a little while?”

I stopped.

My phone was in my hand. The screen still dark.

He made a promise without asking me.

Diane took away her help because I wouldn’t go along with it.

And somehow, the very first solution anybody came up with was for me to change my job.

“What can you change, Mark?” I asked.

He looked surprised. Genuinely surprised.

“I work those hours too.”

“I know you do,” I said. “That’s exactly why we need to work this out together.”

He sat there quietly for a long moment.

“Okay,” he finally said. “I’ll ask my supervisor about an early shift.”

It wasn’t a plan yet.

But I set my phone down on the table instead of calling my manager.

Diane walked out of the kitchen without a word. Her chair was still pushed back from the table. The breakfast tray sat there untouched with its silver dome on.

When she was gone, I turned to Mark.

“Did you really have Noah help you with that?” I asked. “With the breakfast?”

He winced.

“He helped me butter the toast,” Mark said. “And he licked the butter knife. And he thought it was hilarious. I did the rest myself. Nobody was ever going to eat it, Claire.”

“Please don’t ever involve him in getting back at your mother,” I said. “He’s four. He loves her.”

“You’re right,” Mark said quietly. “I shouldn’t have.”

He picked up the tray and carried it to the trash can.

I watched him scrape that soggy toast and those sausages into the garbage.

All I’d ever wanted was for him to back me up on one simple request. Use a clean spoon.

Now I had to find out whether he could accept a decision he didn’t like.
