My MIL Kept Licking the Serving Spoon and Putting It Back in Our Food Then My Husband Finally Taught Her a Lesson

And the smile fell right off her face.

There was toast on the plate. Two slices. But the toast sagged in the middle. Soggy and dark. The browned edges were crumpled up around a wet, mushy patch right in the center.

The sausages had a strange sheen to them. One of them had a flattened, squished end.

The scrambled eggs glistened in a way that was not natural at all.

“Noah and I sucked on every piece,” Mark said pleasantly.

He pulled out a chair and sat down across from her.

“We’re family, Mom. Right?”

My stomach turned over.

I pictured picking up that toast without knowing. And suddenly I wanted the lid back on that tray more than I’ve ever wanted anything.

Diane shoved her chair back so hard it scraped across the tile floor.

“How the hell could you do this to me? I’m your mother!”

“You said being family made it okay,” Mark said. Still calm. “Does that only work when it’s our food?”

“I tasted a spoon!” Diane’s face was bright red. “You deliberately ruined an entire breakfast!”

“You need to respect the food in this house, Mom,” Mark said. “It’s a condition of staying here.”

And that’s when Diane snapped.

“A condition of staying here? Then why did you tell me to rent out my condo?”

The kitchen went silent.

I set my coffee mug down on the counter.

“What?” I said.

I looked at Mark.

“What does she mean?”
