Six weeks later, in late October, I gave birth to a daughter at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital in San Diego.
Seven pounds, nine ounces. Dark hair. Very loud.
I named her Claire.
My mother was holding one of my hands. My father was out in the hallway, pacing, the way he did when I was born.
Thomas flew in two days later. He held Claire in the hospital room for twenty minutes. He cried.
He asked about her. Her weight. Her feeding schedule. Whether she had his chin.
It was the first time.
Thomas is part of Claire’s life now. Through a structured parenting agreement Amanda wrote. He flies out to San Diego one weekend a month. He’s been going to counseling. Real counseling, every week, with a therapist in Dallas.
He’s learning to talk to me without putting Brenda in the middle of every conversation.
The change is slow. And it’s imperfect.
But I don’t confuse effort with reconciliation.
We’re not husband and wife anymore. We never will be again.
But I want my daughter to have a father who can actually see her clearly. And I want boundaries strong enough that she’ll never grow up feeling responsible for managing the grown-ups around her.
On Claire’s first night home from the hospital, I put the old accordion folder in a locked cabinet in my parents’ garage.
Tasha’s spreadsheet was still inside. Thirty-five thousand dollars in tuition. Fourteen thousand in insurance. Twenty-six thousand for Joan. Seven years of receipts. The forty thousand dollars. The audio transcript, printed out, with minute thirty-one and minute thirty-eight highlighted in yellow.
That evidence saved me from being rewritten as a burden, in a life I’d paid for.
But it wasn’t the most important proof I carried anymore.
