Brenda pushed him. I left. The tuition stopped. The family suffered.
He stood in the middle of every single consequence. And claimed none of the choices were his.
“We should talk,” Thomas said. “Without lawyers.”
“No.”
“Emma. Come on. There’s a child involved here.”
My hand went to my stomach. Without my even thinking about it.
“Yes,” I said. “There is.”
He hesitated. Just for a second.
“I meant Tyler.”
Amanda looked up from her legal pad.
That one correction told me more than hours of explanation ever could.
Our baby was still an abstraction to him. A word. A piece of paper with lab orders on it.
Tyler’s tuition was real. Tyler’s tuition was due on the first.
“Mr. Carter,” Amanda said. “This is Amanda Reyes. I’m Emma’s attorney. You should speak with your own attorney. Any further financial requests need to go through counsel.”
Silence.
Then Thomas said, “This is ridiculous. Emma doesn’t even work.”
Amanda’s expression changed.
“Mr. Carter,” she said. Very calmly. “That statement may become relevant. I’d suggest you avoid making any more claims until your attorney has reviewed the financial records.”
He hung up.
I sat there in Amanda’s office with the harbor outside the window and the little black speaker on her desk.
For the first time since I left Dallas, I felt something other than grief.
Not triumph. Not anger.
Distance.
I could finally see the whole thing from the outside.
For years, Thomas had been telling everybody that he carried our household alone. That story made him look generous. Hardworking. Noble.
It made Brenda feel entitled to criticize me at every Sunday dinner.
It made Joan see me as a dependent. A pretty wife who’d married well.
And my silence protected his story. Every single Sunday.
I hadn’t hidden the money from him. He had our tax returns. He had the account summaries. He knew exactly where it came from.
He just liked his version better. The version where every comfort in our life came from his sacrifice.
That version bought him admiration.
And I paid for it.
