The Whole School Laughed When I Wore a Dress to Prom With My Boyfriend Then the Principal Called Us Onto the Stage

Graduation was two weeks later.

When they called my name, “Damien Alexander Reyes,” I walked across the stage in my cap and gown.

And somebody in the bleachers yelled, “PROM KING!”

The whole gym laughed.

But it wasn’t the same laugh as the ballroom. Not even close. It was the good kind. The kind where they’re laughing with you.

Dr. Morrison shook my hand and handed me my diploma.

He leaned in close.

“How are your legs, Mr. Reyes?” he asked quietly.

I stared at him.

“Mr. Callahan heard you on the dance floor,” he said. He nodded toward the chaperones in the front row. “He tells me everything.”

“They’re ready,” I said.

“Good,” he said. “They’re going to need to be. The world is a lot bigger than this gym.”

He let go of my hand.

“Go show it what you’ve got.”

Noah’s in Chicago now, at Northwestern. Studying engineering. I’m at Illinois, two and a half hours south, studying journalism. We see each other every other weekend. He still orders my coffee without asking.

Oat milk. Extra shot. No foam. Never caramel.

The green dress is hanging in the back of my dorm closet, in a garment bag. My roommate asked me about it the first week.

I told him the whole story.

He listened to all of it. Then he said, “Dude. You should wear it to the spring formal.”

“Maybe,” I said.

“You should.”

Maybe I will.

Here’s what I learned that night, at the Grand Regency Hotel, in a dress I bought with three months of coffee tips and one questionable coupon.

I walked into prom hoping nobody would laugh.

I walked out knowing that laughter was never the loudest sound in that room.

The loudest sound was one girl in a gold dress, standing up in the front row, clapping by herself.

Until she wasn’t by herself anymore.
